What is a Psycho-Educational Assessment?

A psycho-educational assessment is a valuable tool that provides a detailed understanding of an individual's cognitive abilities, academic skills, and social-emotional functioning. Psycho-educational assessments are completed with children (age 7 and up), adolescents, and adults.

At Thriving Minds, we use a strength-based approach that provides a clear picture of an individual’s learning profile, which can guide the development of personalized strategies to enhance their success at school, work, and beyond.

While an assessment may lead to a diagnosis, its greatest benefit lies in providing tailored supports and strategies that foster growth. Through this process, we can identify:

  • Learning Disorders
  • Intellectual Disabilities
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Mood and anxiety challenges

The fee for a psycho-educational assessment
is $2700.

If an ADHD evaluation is included, an additional $450 will be charged, bringing the total to $3150.

Assessment Process

An assessment usually involves the following steps:
01

Pre-Appointment

The client (age 18 and up) and/or parents/guardians will be sent questionnaires to complete prior to attending the intake appointment.
02

Intake Appointment

An intake appointment is scheduled with the client (age 16 and up) and/or parents/guardians to discuss any concerns and specific questions you would like to have answered. Consent forms are signed at this appointment.
03

Rating Scales

Depending on the focus of the assessment, standardized rating scales may be used to gather information about social-emotional functioning, adaptive skills, and any concerns related to ADHD. Clients, parents/guardians, and teachers may be asked to complete these rating scales.
04

Testing Sessions

Approximately 1 to 3 one-on-one testing appointments will be scheduled to complete the assessment. Each session is approximately 1.5 to 3 hours but can be adjusted depending on the client’s needs and comfort level. The standardized tests that are used depend on the assessment questions. For a psycho-educational assessment, cognitive and academic testing is completed. However, for an ADHD assessment, only cognitive testing is completed.
05

Records Review

A review of school records and previous assessments is completed, if available.
06

Feedback Meeting

A feedback meeting with the client (age 16 and up) and/or parents/guardians is scheduled. Younger teens (age 14 and up) can also attend this session, if appropriate. During this meeting, the results are presented along with a range of recommendations based on the unique profile of the client. This meeting includes a discussion of the client's strengths and areas for growth and support.
07

Written Report

A comprehensive written report summarizing all the assessment information and recommendations is provided to the client and/or parents/guardians during the feedback meeting.
08

Child-Friendly Option

For children and younger teens, if the parent/guardian wishes, a separate meeting can be scheduled to share the results with them in a child-friendly way.
